The grim toll of attacks
on press freedom

Three weeks of Israeli occupation
of Palestinian towns:
a report from
RSF / RWB [Reporters Sans Frontières /
Reporters Without Borders]

" a massive, deliberate and conscious
violation of press freedom and an
unprecedented low in the history
of Israel."

About RSF / RWB

"Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right
shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and
ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing
or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of
his choice."

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Defending Press Freedom

"
The organisation was founded in 1985 with the aim of producing
follow-up reports on catastrophes that the established press neglects
after the first sensational front-page stories have been forgotten.

For four years, Reporters Without Borders (RWB) sponsored
reports on wars and problem countries that the media had overlooked.
But during this period, a problem underlying the initiative taken by
RWB became steadily more apparent: the difficulties faced by
journalists trying to do their work freely and without hindrance." [..]

The grim toll of attacks on press freedom
Three weeks of Israeli occupation of Palestinian towns
Israel 18.04.2002

"The policy of the Israeli authorities towards the international media,
especially Palestinian journalists, must be condemned for what it is:
a massive, deliberate and conscious violation of press freedom and
an unprecedented low in the history of Israel."

The numbers  . . .

7 journalists wounded
4 journalists detained
15 journalists arrested
60 journalists targeted by gunfire
20 journalists roughed up or threatened
20 journalists who had passports, press cards or equipment confiscated
10 Arab media offices occupied or ransacked
1 journalist deported

3 May 2002: 12th International Press Freedom Day

"Because 120 journalists are still in prison around the world and
because 31 journalists were murdered last year, Reporters Without
Borders
(RSF) continues to denounce those everywhere who attack
the right to inform people. On 3 May, RSF will be celebrating the 12th
International Press Freedom Day so as to alert public opinion to the
need to stand up for press freedom and challenge public officials,
international organisations and the media about their contribution to it." [...]
